Counting starts as a song ("one, two, three") long before it means "how many". Children get there by counting real things, again and again, and by hearing that the last number counted is the answer. The number games in Toddler's Galaxy are built around that: lots of counting, out loud, with pictures to touch.
Number Island: the numbers 1 to 20
Number Island has a card for every number from 1 to 20. Tap the 7 card and the device's voice says "Number seven! Let's count: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7!", while the card shows seven things to count. Hearing the whole count, not just the number, links the word "seven" to the amount.
Number Island includes Tracing, so children can draw each numeral with a finger, and Counting, where they count the objects and choose how many.
Counting in other worlds
Counting isn't only in Number Island. Many worlds, including Safari Adventure, Fruit Forest, Adventure Garage, Underwater Kingdom, Dinosaurs and Galaxy Explorer, have their own Counting game. A child who loves dinosaurs can count dinosaurs; a child who loves fire trucks can count fire trucks.
Number mini-games
Games World has mini-games that go a step beyond counting:
- Number Hop Hop: help the frog hop across numbered pads in order, up to 5, then 8, then 10.
- Fair Share Party: share cookies equally between two or three friends, an early idea of dividing.
- Small to Big: put three, four, then five things in order of size.
- Which Is Heavier?: compare two groups on a balance.
Counting together at home
Children learn counting best with real things in their hands. A few easy ideas:
- Count the stairs. Say a number on every step, up and down.
- Snack counting. "You have five grapes. Eat one. How many now?"
- Touch and count. When counting toys, touch each one as you say its number, so no toy is counted twice.
- Spot numbers outside. Bus numbers, door numbers and price tags are everywhere.
